The Grosse PointeWar Memorial,

presented by Suzy Berschback and Ann Marie Aliotta

Location:

Grosse Pointe War Memorial, 32 Lake Shore Road, Grosse Pointe Farms

Event co-sponsors include Grosse Pointe War Memorial and Grosse Pointe Historical Society

The Grosse Pointe War Memorial, designed by New York architect Charles A. Platt, was

built in 1910 for Russell Alger, Jr. and his family. Alger was Vice President and stockholder

of Packard Motor Car Co. The mansion was donated to the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1936

but ownership reverted back to the Alger family in 1948 when the Detroit City Council

declined to continue supporting a suburban facility. The following year it was given to the

Grosse Pointe community in honor of WW II veterans. It is a local, state and national

historic site.

presented by Dr. Charles Hyde

Location:

Grosse Pointe War Memorial, 32 Lake Shore Road, Grosse Pointe Farms

With roots extending back to the early twentieth century, Nash Motor Company and Hudson

Motor Car Company survived until 1954 when they merged to form American Motors Company.

AMC remained independent until it became part of Chrysler Corporation in 1987. These

companies, often overlooked, made notable contributions to automotive engineering and styling

visionary leaders who managed the companies, including Grosse Pointers Roy D. Chapin,

A. Edward Barit and Roy D. Chapin Jr.
