SCHOOL VISITS
As of mid-November, 18 classes are scheduled for field trips to the Provencal-
Weir House’s One-Room School. The word is out that the One-Room School is a
great experience for a day of classes from the 1900s.The most important benefits for
local teachers are the location, the One-Room School and the local history we offer.
We are also affordable. We allow for lunch and recess with vintage toys and offer
pioneer costumes if needed. I had a fifth grade boy come up to me last year and say,
“I was very concerned about recess when I got here because you do not have a
playground. But I have to tell you I have had a lot of fun here today with your toys.”
I assured him how relieved I was with a smile.
SCOUTS
Girl Scout Troop 40696 visited the Provencal-Weir House in October, 2011 for
a class on etiquette and earned their etiquette badges. These 4th grade Monteith stu-
dents learned how they would have set a table in 1922 for a twelve course meal, what
suitable manners were for a young lady of that time period, how to stand and walk
appropriately with a book on their head, and how to formerly greet adults. Also, they
learned how to set a formal dining room table for 2011, what manners and appropri-
ate behavior is in school, at home
and at play. At the end of the class
they shook cream into butter for a
treat with pumpkin muffins baked
by their troop leader Michelle Rees.
November brought Boy Scouts
from Richard School’s first grade
for a tour of the house and log
cabin.The following week the Wolf
Scouts from Star of the Sea came
for a tour.The Provencal-Weir
House and log cabin are a pure
delight for all the children and
scouts who pass through its doors.
