More than 700 students visit
One-Room School this Spring
Introducing children to the delights of
local history is one of the Grosse Pointe Historical Society’s most important missions.
This year, more children than ever before visited the Provencal-Weir House’s
One-Room School.
In May and June alone, 29 elementary school groups came to the One-Room
School at the Provencal-Weir House. More than 700 passed through the PWH
doors to experience what school might have
been like for Grosse Pointe children
“My schedule filled up so quickly that I
had to go to one local school to give a Power-
Point presentation to four of their second grade
classes because there were no more spaces
available at the Provencal-Weir House”, said
Izzy Donnelly, the Director of Education.
“The teacher promised to call ahead next
time to book her classes early.” This totaled
33 groups of school children learning the wonderful history of Grosse Pointe and
Pierre and Euphemia Provencal.
“I was just delighted there were so many first time visitors this spring,”Donnelly
added. “The teachers were just amazed at the local history we offer in our program
and how it all ties so closely to their curriculum. They also loved the fact that the
Provencal-Weir House is so close to their schools. Many groups were able to walk
and carry their lunches over their shoulders.”
Full-day classes for third, fourth, and fifth grades offered a spelling bee and
the winner was awarded a vintage toy from LaBelle’s Country Store. “Some of the
children were worried they would not receive anything to take home, but this year I
supplied each student with a log pen or pencil as a ‘thank you’ gesture for visiting the
One-Room School. Many of the teachers commented afterwards how wonderful the
Provencal-Weir House experience was and that the children especially enjoyed the
pencils and pens,”Donnelly said. The Provencal-Weir House visits are open to all the
schools year round. For details go on our website or call Izzy at 313-884-7010.
New volunteers and assistants help at the GPHS.
This summer brought new faces to GPHS. Mary Ridella and Daniel Kubacki
were assistants at Ribbon Farm Days 2011 and were a tremendous help.William
Dawson started at the Resource Center and is helping with digitizing. Michelle
Agosta continues to be valiant in organizing, cataloging and storing our blue prints.
By the new year we hope to have a list of all the blue prints we have in our possession
on our web site.
