Jim Conway, Grosse Pointe Historical Society board member and former Detroit Historical Museum Chief Curator will present a program relating to his new book, "Detroit's Historic Fort Wayne." His talk, which is sponsored by the GPHS, takes place at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial, 32 Lakeshore Rd., Grosse Pointe Farms. Part of the Dr. Frank Bicknell Educational Lecture Series, it is free and open to the public.
Historic Fort Wayne was built in 1845 as a new artillery post to serve the United States in future attacks by British Canada. Throughout its more than 160-year history, however, the Fort has largely been a peaceful location, serving as an infantry garrison and a primary induction point for Michigan troops entering every U.S. conflict from the Civil War through the Vietnam War. Today, the Fort hosts historic re-enactments, special events and outdoor activities for visitors.
