Second Saturday Pastimes

On the Second Saturday of each month, during the Grosse Pointe Historical Society's open-house tours you are invited to drop in at 376 Kercheval to the 1823 Provencal-Weir house. Sponsored by the Alice Kales Hartwick Foundation. The activities and the tour are free of charge but donations are suggested. *A limited number of tickets will be sold for the October 2008 event by calling 313-884-7010.


2008 Calendar

  • January 12 - Murder at the Juice Joint: An Evening of Murder, Mayhem & the Mob. A Second Saturday event for adults - 6:00-9:00 pm at the Provencal-Weir House; 376 Kercheval, Grosse Pointe Farms. Reservations requested - as space is limited. Free of charge; donations welcome. The Juice Joint will be certain to serve up a night of mayhem and local history. Come promptly at 6:00 pm in costume to learn your past. Come dressed as a mobster or moll from the 1920s.
  • March 8- Riches or Rubbish?: 1-4 pm. Antique appraisal afternoon with DuMochelle's Art Gallery ($5 per item suggested donation to Society)

  • April 12 - Community-wide History Scavenger Hunt: 1-4 pm. Start and end at the Provencal-Weir house. Led by Nancy Pacitto. Complimentary.

  • May 10 - Mini Encampment at the Provencal-Weir house: 1-4 pm. Enjoy an Historical Timeline of 20 re-enactors led by Paul Ignagni with special appearance by the Fiddlepointe players of Grosse Pointe. Complimentary.

  • June 14 - Ice Cream Social: 1-4 pm with local folk music group Rosetta Pebble. Complimentary.

  • July 12 - Historical Caricatures: 1-4 pm by appointment with artist Marcella Rochon. Complimentary.

  • August 9 - Model T Celebrates 100 years!: 1-4 pm. Celebrate with the Model T club, see their cars and meet the members, hear Mike Skinner, GPHS board member and Ford Historian, speak on the Model T. Complimentary.

  • September 13 - Guided Walking Tour: 1-4 pm. Tour of the Neighborhood surrounding the Provencal-Weir house. Starts promptly at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m. from the Provencal –Weir house and led by Al Dickenson. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Complimentary.

  • October 11 - St. Paul's Cemetery Walk: 6-9 pm. Walk led by Amy DeWys-VanHeck, Marguerite Humes and Bill Schwedler. *Tickets are $10 per person by Oct. 8, or $12 at the gate.

  • November 8 - Legends of the Fall: 1-4 pm. Local legends come to life with Genot Picor and fiddler Michael Francis. Complimentary.

  • December 13 - Dickens of a Christmas Caroling Party: 6-9 pm. Enjoy local Carolers, carriage rides, refreshments and holiday treats, and Christmas décor and exhibits, hosted by Cyndee Harrison. Complimentary.
